The text “For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Outside of Marriage” is a feature article that depicts the concern of the lives of children raised out of wedlock. Feature articles provide information which are not necessarily newsworthy but it reflects events and values within a particular time period that are targeted towards the general public. It has been mediated by its journalists and editors through the prioritization of information that they believe would be the most useful and relevant to its readers, thus, may offer a sense of bias. This article in particular suggests the normality and the frequency of births occurring outside of marriage in today’s modern world. Although it aims to inform objectively, the author still manages to be influenced by several instances of biases in their writing, representing the social groups such as women and couples in a particular way in the text.

How and why is a social group represented in a particular way?
Opinion columns reflect the personal opinion of an author towards a subject that are typically newsworthy or controversial, which may reveal societal ideologies and values within a particular period of time. An example is “Now not to talk to someone with depression”, written by columnist SE Smith and published in a major newspaper, The Guardian. The column aims to inform to the audience, non-depressive individuals about depression, in a non-aggressive tone in order to call the reader to action and evoke awareness by listing common responses of the audience towards depressed individuals and attempting to overcome these opposing arguments. The column presents depressed people as being vulnerable, victimizing them and antagonizing depression as a mental illness under a negative light in order achieve the columnist’s goal.
