Said Mahran Passage Analysis

Chapter 7: Said Attempts to Kill Illish  Passage: It seems you must knock on the door. But knocking might arouse suspicion, especially at this hour. Nabawiyya would fill the world with her screams, and bring some cowardly fools. That detective, too. So you'd better break the little glass pane in the door. He'd had the idea in the car on the way and now he came back to it. He drew his gun and gave the glass one blow through the twisted bars that protected it. As the glass broke and the pieces scattered, it made a noise like a choked-off scream in the silent night. He flattened himself against the wall, next to the door and waited, his heart beating fast and his eyes peering into the darkness of the entrance hall where the gun was pointed. A man's voice, which he could recognize as Ilish Sidra's despite the throbbing noise in his temples, said "Who's there?" and a door to the left opened, giving a faint light by which he could just make out the fi...

Stream Of Consciousness, Narrative Style Analysis

How, why, and to what effect does Mahfouz use stream-of-consciousness narration in the novel? The Thief and The Dogs is an Egyptian novel written by Naguib Mahfouz, and it is a pioneer of psychological realistic novels in Arabic literature. Mahfouz uses modernistic conventions, particularly the stream of consciousness in his novel to produce a unique piece, with the purpose to enhance the characterization the novel’s protagonist, Said Mahran. Mahfouz aims to reproduce a continuous flow of Said’s mental processes throughout the novel to be able to further understand Said as a character and the way his mind works that has led him to do what he does, thus justifying for his actions and behavior. Mahfouz creates the illusion that the reader is within Said’s mind, which is done through Said’s interior monologue. An example is “ I suppose I'd find nothing but betrayal there: Nabawiyya disguised as Rauf, Rauf disguised as Nabawiyya, or Ilish Sidra in place of both--and betrayal would...

Texts in Translation

Your task is to write a response that  examines   the study of literature in translation.  Your response should demonstrate an awareness of specific benefits and challenges through references to today’s readings, as well as making tangible connections to the learning outcomes from Part 3 of the course. The purpose of translating literature is to expand the range of audiences of a work from a particular culture to expose and spread different identities around the world to enhance our understanding and develop empathy with one another, making the work of translation a challenging one. Translators have the responsibility to maintain the originality and authenticity of a text from one language to another, yet to also make it distinct and unique. Without translated literature, we would be grounded with our own cultural, historical and social values and identity as a result of language barriers, thus limiting our understandings and knowledge capacity. However, also due to ...

Satirical Response

Original Article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/oct/30/indonesia-fires-disaster-21st-century-world-media What I’m discussing is literally hell on earth. A length of 5,000km of Indonesia is facing the ultimate punishment of God, buried under the deepest levels of blazing flames, except humans a re the one imposing this punishment as if we have the power that can be compared to that of God. And it shouldn't require a columnist, writing in the middle of a newspaper, to say so. It should always be a part of everyone’s daily prayers, constantly asking forgiveness to Almighty God for what we have done to His creations. The scale of this sin is hard to convey, but here’s a comparison. In the Ten Commandments of the Holy Bible and the Torah, God commanded “Thou shall not kill” which prohibits human kind for unlawful killing. In the Holy Quran, God stated “Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind ent...

The personal history of an author can have a significant influence on the way meaning is constructed in his or her writing. Chinua Achebe, the author of Things Fall Apart is an example of this influence. Achebe, a Nigerian writer has written his novel Things Fall Apart in 1958 towards the independence of Nigeria from years of British colonization. He tells a story of Okonkwo, a man from the Igbo community struggling to resist the changes in his society brought by the colonist. Meanwhile, Achebe, being a member of the first generation of Westernized Nigeria, has adapted to these changes through his father being one of the converts to Christianity, even though he is still patriotic of his Igbo identity. As a result, this has led to the writing of Things Fall Apart to revolve around the pre coloniza...
