Stereotypes in Advertising

Gender Portrayals in the Food Industry Advertisements
Although one would not often expect controversial advertisements originated from the food industry, especially the fast food industry in which the industry usually has awn overall happy an joyful mood in general, there are still certain ads from the food industry in which needs to be eliminated due to the channels of stereotypes it has on the audience. The advertisements below came from Burger King and Carl's Jr (Hardees), relatively famous fast food chains.

1) What commonalities/differences exist between your chosen advertisements in terms of how gender is presented?
All three advertisements portrays the inappropriate sexual aspects of women. One of the advertisements of Burger King objectifying a nude woman in gold next to a burger to advertise the Golden Collection of Burger King. The other advertisement from Burger King also objectifies the head of a woman wearing dark red lipstick with a burger coming towards her mouth, implementing inappropriate sexual acts in the advertisements. The advertisement from Carl's Jr does not include any images of women but the caption of the ad compares chick breasts uses for their burgers with the breasts of women without seeming to purposely do it, and having the audience come to realization by themselves. All three advertisements uses sexual aspects in order to grab the audience's attention, in which  is a frequently used technique to advertise. The objectification and inappropriate portrayals of women in the advertisements present women as worthless or submissive objects.

2) What do your chosen ads reveal about how your industry/product is marketed to consumers?
As stated above, the fast food industry is often not the main source of inappropriate and controversial advertisements and one of their main target audience are younger individuals in which children enjoy eating fast food. The chosen advertisements reveal that the food industry still uses sexist and gender discriminating to desperately advertise their food chains. It shows that these chains are desperate for customers so they chose to use sexuality and women to reach their aim.

3) What do your ads reveal about society?
These advertisements reveal that sexism and gender discrimination still exists in our society. These ads also reveal that society responds to advertisements better in which includes sexual aspects, male or female, as it is human nature for individuals to be attracted to this. This weakness of humans give the advantage to industries including the fast food industry to advertise their products by portraying them in their advertisements. With women already seen as the weaker gender in society, industries including this one continue to act upon it thorough their advertisements and practically "promote" this even more.
