Pitch Reflection
The main appeals I used for my pitch in order to advertise a high energy drink in the UAE are the need to achieve and the need for autonomy. High energy drinks are often consumed by younger individuals who are often stressed out and busy. In the context of the UAE, our idea for the ad is that Emirati students who often relied on their maids to do their work, are suffering in university as they have no one else to depend on other than themselves, and by drinking the energy drink, they are suddenly able to do everything. Thus, I have decided that these two appeals are the most effecting for out advert since being able to do things yourself is an achievement and it also shows that you are autonomous and you do not need to rely on anyone else. The persuasive techniques and language used in my pitch were bandwagon, nostalgia and slippery slope. The use of bandwagon is effective because it implies that since everyone is doing it, so should I. The example of bandwagon used was that since all university students are able to live all on their own by drinking the energy drink, so should I, which persuades the audience to do it as well. The use of nostalgia is effective because it invokes a time in which life where it was much better that it is missed. In this case, life for students was once simple and comfortable, such as the maid used to clean my room, and now, there are a lot of responsibilities as a university student. The use of slippery slope is effective because it combines the emotion of extrapolation and fear. So in this example, instead of predicting a positive future, it warns against a negative outcome, where if the university student is unable to depend on themselves, it would lead to failing university, having no job, no family and eventually die. The awareness of the audience and the context influences the overall approach as it enhances my understanding of the audience in order to create an advert in which the audience could relate to. Since the audience are young and busy individuals in the UAE, the idea of Emirati university students who are suffering would allow the audience to relate more to the advert. In addition to that, since young people are often basing their lives on social media, the approach of locating the ads on these platforms enhances the visibility of the ad to the audience. The images used in the presentation included images of successful Emirati graduates, stressed college students overall and maids. It was included so that the company that the ad is being presented to is able to have some sort of sneak peak on what the advert would visually look like. I think that the presentation was effective because my partner and I used different techniques in order to persuade the company to hire us including the use of statistics, the method we presented our ideas in which seemed comprehendible and our presentation skills overall. This activity would help prepare me for the FOA as I was able to practice my presentation skills, my creativity skills and my analysis skills.
