Ethical Considerations in Art - 13 Reasons Why

The article discusses about the effects of the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why", a TV show based on a high school girl who committed suicide with the show intended to promote suicide awareness and prevention. However, the TV series also sparked a suicide contagion effect on the audience, as criticized by suicide prevention experts. The TV series is obviously the work of art in the perspective of the creator of the show and fans of the show.  Yet, critics of the TV show 13 Reasons Why suggested the creator to consider some limitations while producing the show. I understand that the effects the art would have on the audience should be considered by the artist because the effects of art would influence another human being which is a something major and significant, whether the effects are positive or negative, especially negative. In most cases, the purpose of art to the audience is to evoke a certain emotion that as a result, would inspire them in some ways to perform a certain actions. So that behavior of human beings, along with statistics of Google searches regarding the topic of suicide, is why the TV show was criticized not to only to promote suicide prevention, but to also increase the potential of suicide as well among its audience. Artists should consider the ethics of the effects of their artworks because it effects the audience which can be extended into a global scale. However, to me personally, art is often used as a way for one to express themselves through the use of creativity and imaginative skills. Self expression, especially in art, should involve a feeling of freedom where you are able to express yourself without any boundaries or limits whatsoever. Another purpose of art is so that artists are able to convey their state of mind at a certain moments and the audience are able to witness the experience of the artists through their work of art. So in a way, art could also be mainly about the artists rather than the audience. But different artists may have different perspectives on how they see art and how they want their artworks to represent or to cause. In conclusion, in my opinion, art is supposed to be a person's safe space which they are able to run away with from the real world in times where they just want to escape but at the same time, the audience also matter and how they would see the artwork should be considered by artists.
