An Exclusive Q&A with Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift's new single "Look What You Made Me Do" just dropped two months ago and it is not written by the Taylor we used to know and adore. The used to be country singer who kept going on and on about her past love experiences is apparently "dead' now and is rising back up even better than ever. We sat with the "new" Taylor and chatted about her music and the town of her musical roots.
Your new single "Look What You Made Me Do" peaked into the top charts and broke a variety of records. Congratulations on that!
Thank you so much. I'm honestly really glad that my new song and it's style turned out great and my fans are enjoying it. Although "Look What You Made Me Do" and my upcoming album "Reputation" shouldn't be a huge surprise to my fans since "1989", my album that dropped in 2014 was also written in a smilier style and it was a huge breakthrough for my career.
Yeah I personally adore the new single. Speaking of your new style, tell us about about your musical roots. How did the Taylor Swift that we all love begin?
I became interested into country music since I was 10. I was obsessed with country artists Faith Hill and Shania Twain who also started their careers in Nashville Tennessee so I always wanted to live there. We eventually moved to Nashville when I was 14 and there, I got a MAJOR record deal. I worked with artists from the Music Row, which is a district in Nashville that is filled with businesses related to country music. And from there, I began my career.
You seem to have a deep connection with the country music community. Tell us more.
I was influenced by amazing female country artists from the 90s such as Shania, Hill and the Dixie Chicks. They were the ones who dragged me into loving country music. I love learning and writing music in a town as charming as Nashville. The country music community is the closest musical community that I know and I maintain my connections with my country friends and fans. I said this in the 2015 ACM Awards and ill say it again. I am just proud that I learned to treat people with kindness and respect from country music. My 1989 album was a way for me to explore other genres than country and the country music community accepted that and supported me throughout the entire journey so I am just extremely thankful for the community.
That must have been a very touching moment for you. Since your musical style is changing and drifting away from country music, what do you have to say to your country fans?
Yes, my music has been evolving since I was a 14 year old country girl in Nashville and it will continue to evolve. But the country music community should not be threatened in any way. In some ways, country will always be the core of my music and will always be represented, even though my recent music did not seem like it did. But I can guarantee you that it's always going to be there. I never forgot about country music and I never will because it is where I came from. It is a part of my identity and roots of my success.
